The foundation stone for the first church on this site was laid in 1856.
Demolished & replaced with temporary weatherboard structure in 1888, it still stands today
Considered the largest wooden church in Southern hemisphere, Rev Dr Backhaus, the first catholic priest in Bendigo is buried in the grounds
