Moonta

Its origins in 1860 were extremely fortunate - a shepherd noticed traces of copper on a wombat burrow - which led to the establishmentof the Moonta Mining Company, that soon became one of the richest copper mines in OZ.

The ensuing flood of skilled miners from Cornwall changed the cultural mix in SA. Apart from contributing to an economic explosion the immigrants, affectionately known as Cousin Jacks & Jennies, eventually gave us the Kernewek Lowender, worlds largest Cornish festival held every second year on odd numbered years. it's a festival of all things Cornish, from pasties to Swanky & ginger pop, maypole dancing
