Serviceton was originally on the border between Victoria & South Australia. In 1887 Victoria claimed it as theirs, but these days it's a ghost town in middle of no-mans land
Serviceton was established after the Victorian & Sth Australian governments decided to build a junction station midway between their capitals, when the broad gauge railway line was being built (completed June 1886). It was named after Sir James Service, former Victorian premier & was gazetted on 1 January 1887. The township was to house & cater for railway employees to enable them to work within their own state
Only trains that pass by these days are freight & the Overlander passenger train to & from Melbourne to Adelaide
Caretaker gave us a guided tour of the station
