Historic Port Fairy

The historic seaside village of Port Fairy is a unique example of a well preserved 19th century shipping port.  The township has retained its old world character.

After spending several days inland to try & get away from the very strong wind & cold, we are now back to coast

The meandering Moyne river runs out to the sea here @ Port Fairy

A walk around Griffiths island took us about 1 hour

Griffith island lighthouse built 1859 from local bluestone

Battery hill  & powder magazine.  This hill first served as the Harbour Master's signal point for shipping.  Local militia units established the gun batteries & built fortifications in 1887.

The wharf area at its peak in 1850's the port was one of the busiest in Australia.  Wool, wheat & gold were loaded onto great sailing ships bound for England
